horseback elk hunt with 4 of your buddies

A drive in drop camp allows you to be camped in good elk hunting but does not require the 2 hour horse ride and pack in and out at the beginning and the end of the hunt.

It is a 7 day trip but packing in and out on horseback takes one day in and 1 day out with the exception of the drive in drop camp. In all drop camps no horses will be left at the drop camps for hunting off of during the week unless prior arrangements have been made.

With an outfitter providing a 100% success last year and running in the high 90% for the last 5 years or so he has the elk knowledge to provide you with an opportunity to take an elk. No matter how great the opportunities are in number and degree it still requires the hunter to practice before arriving at camp. The guide can only do so much it takes a shot in the right place to “seal the deal” as they say. We strongly recommend as much practice as possible. It is your shooting skills that make the decision as to whether or not you take an elk home in most cases.

The state population of elk is in the western half. Comparing to New Mexico’s 60,000, and the similar number for Utah, Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, it make you stand up and take notice that Colorado had 375,000 3 years ago, with 2 years ago clocking in at 405,000, followed by this year’s estimate of 455,000 head living in the western half of Colorado. You will be surrounded by some of the largest elk densities in the world. With that said I will state that there isn’t as dumb one in the state, just some are smarter than others. I recommend that you do everything possible to be successful. If it is the first day, so be it. The outfitter reminds you he is not a rain dancer or a snow goddess. He is not even a certified weatherman. Elk and deer are very connected to weather and weather patterns. One day deer and elk show up everywhere, followed by the next day when they have all disappeared like brown ghosts.

This veteran outfitter realizes successful hunters and age and age means years of hunting experience. He wants them to continue to be successful through the years. He also knows that younger hunters can and are more physically active and uses physical levels to improve hunter success even more. You will be hunt one of two areas in western Colorado. With western Colorado holding close to 450,000 elk I can’t think of anywhere you would rather be on an elk hunt. You will see mule deer when hunting elk but the elk are much more plentiful and to some degree the thicker the elk the fewer deer you will see. Also the deer licenses requires some points or a landowner voucher to purchase a license. The bull elk you will be taking have a minimum size restriction so as a rule we take 4x4’s, 5x5’s , and 6x6’s under 300 inches but there are definitely exception larger than the average.

Your outfitter is a second generation Licensed Professional Guide and Outfitter continuing the traditions of his father who started the business in 1958. With his 35+ years’ experience, he will provide you with the best hunt possible. His lifetime of experience will give you the experience of a lifetime! A seasoned professional guide and outfitter will guarantee that you get a good honest hunt with guides that work hard for your success.
